Simply put, the term “authentic sea glass” makes reference to the natural process where broken bottles and glassware are worn down over time by the constant exposure to surf, sand and rocks.
As it relates to authentic sea glass found in The Bahamas, ships from all over the region including the Americas and the Caribbean often wrecked on the notorious Bahamian coral reefs spilling their contents which often included everything from medicine and alcohol bottles to decorative glass artifacts.
One of the reason I and other authentic sea glass enthusiasts really love this type of glass is because of the “imperfections” and “irregularities” found in sand blasted hand blown glass. They create more visual interest than for example the perfect symmetry, thickness and colors of newer broken glass.
Length of exposure, color and the age of the glass all affect the final look of the glass. It is also becoming more and more difficult to find authentic glass as more people collect it.

The colors shown in the left column are rare and treasured finds. The white, brown and dark green colors are the most abundant. |
